The Modern dance technique taught at MHDC is loosely based on the techniques of Lester Horton.
“The Horton dance technique, which is now commonly known as Horton Technique, emphasizes a whole body, anatomical approach to dance that includes flexibility, strength, coordination and body and spacial awareness to enable unrestricted, dramatic freedom of expression.” (wikipedia)
Classroom exercises include a thorough warmup, floor work, progressions across the floor as well as choreography and extensive improvisational work to encourage young dancers to experiment with creating personal artistry, freedom of movement and contact with other dancers.
